Elmo and Zoe Halloween Costumes

A couple of months ago I started getting emails advertising Halloween costumes.  I looked at the options online, and had a hard time justifying the cost of the available costumes.  It would be a little different if Zoe was six, obsessed with Moana, and would play dress up in her costume for the next year.

Jack was almost two and had just become obsessed with Elmo.  Elmo’s best friend is Zoe, and it was just too perfect for our Zoe to be dressed as Zoe.  (Apparently I have a thing for matching names.  Last year Jack was Jack-Jack from the Incredibles.)

While Elmo costumes are available commercially, I was not going to put my 2-year-old in a fur costume in Texas.  He doesn’t understand the concept of dressing up for Halloween, I wasn’t sure he would even recognize the fur costume as “Melmo,” and it would be very uncomfortable.

Instead, I decided to knit/crochet hats for them and fill out the rest of their costumes with clothes from their closet.  They would give the impression of the characters while still being comfortable.

For Jack, I made his hat.  Can’t knit or crochet?  You can buy an Elmo hat on Amazon or Etsy.  I added a solid red Elmo t-shirt and jeans.  He could still run around being himself, and he had “Melmo” on his clothes, which was pretty cool.  At a party we attended this weekend, another toddler was following him around calling him Elmo, so I call that a success.

I also made Zoe’s hat.  If you can’t knit or crochet, Zoe hats are a little harder to come by, but are still available on Etsy.  Because Zoe (the character) loves to dance and often wears a ballet costume, we put our Zoe in a solid pink onesie and leggings with a tutu she wore during her newborn pictures and socks made to look like pointe shoes.

Fruit and Veggie Oatmeal Muffins (Gluten Free)

Anyone else have a toddler who would gladly live off only carbs?  Yeah.  Us, too.  I developed this recipe to trick my toddler into eating some more fruit and vegetables while he thinks he’s eating carbs.  The muffins look like muffins and are sweet, like a cross between banana and zucchini bread.

It’s absolutely incredible when you look at the nutritional facts of a “typical” coffee shop blueberry muffin and a healthy muffin such as the one in this recipe.  While a coffee shop muffin may be larger than the healthy muffin (exact size wasn’t given), the overall calories, carbs, sugar, fat, and sodium are dramatically decreased beyond the size effect, and the healthy muffin contains much more fiber and vitamins (see the full nutritional information at the bottom of the post).  This muffin is definitely something I can feed my toddler and feel good about it!  And he loves them.

Ingredients:

  • ~3/4 cup food processed zucchini
  • ~3/4 cup food processed carrots
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups gluten free old fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup Truvia brown sugar baking blend
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 400 deg
  • Prepare muffin pan by spraying with cooking spray or using muffin liners (I love silicone liners!)
  • Add zucchini and carrots to the blender and blend until fine.  I’m not very exact when measuring the zucchini and carrots.  I will put a whole small zucchini or half of a large zucchini in the blender and then add baby carrots until I end up with about 1 1/2 cups of zucchini and carrots.  My blender is marks volume on the size so I can easily see how much zucchini and carrots I have.
  • Add all remaining ingredients except raisins and blend until smooth

  • Mix raisins into batter by hand
  • Place batter in prepared muffin tins.  The volume will be slightly different each time because of varying fruit and vegetable sizes.  This will make approximately 15 muffins.
  • Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean
  • Eat fresh or freeze for later

Oscar the Grouch Baby Hat

A friend of a friend asked me to make an Oscar the Grouch baby hat.  The patterns I found didn’t have the right eye shape, so I made up my own.  I love his eyebrows!  The hat knits up to be about 14 inches around, but is very stretchy.  It easily fits my friend’s baby with an 18 inch head.  The shape of the hat is based on my Baby Turkey Hat pattern.
